Wooden Chess
Wooden chess sets are the most common type of set being used today. Most professional chess teams and competitions use chess pieces made of wood for regulatory purposes. There is also such a wide variety of woods used to create chess sets, that they match almost any budget.
Ebony is typically the most expensive type of wooden chess set. It is the heaviest wood and the color is beautiful – a very dark brown with a tiny tint of red. Rosewood and boxwood also tend to be more expensive, and are also very popular in professional chess sets. Woods such as walnut are less expensive, but more common among players who play on occasion or for fun.
In the home, wooden chess boards are very common and very elegant. Wooden boards are recommended for those studying chess regularly as they will last a long time and are very nice to look at. On a professional level wooden boards are rarely seen in competitions besides the US Championship and other very high level tournaments.
