A chess set will include a chess board and 32 chess pieces. The various types of chess sets available across the world are virtually endless. Some of the many styles include, traditional wood sets, contemporary glass sets, travel sets, specially themed chess sets, collectable chess sets, marble chess sets and many more.

A good quality chess set will be made with exotic, high quality woods such as ebony, rosewood and boxwood, or beautiful and durable stones such as marble. When you are shopping for a nice set, first make sure that the material the pieces and board are made of are not some type of wood veneer or plastic. Also make sure that the squares on the board are cut and inlaid in the board, as opposed to simply being painted on. High quality chess sets will also have heavier chess pieces, so the pieces won’t fall over easily.

The wide varieties of chess sets available today are considered a form of art by many. The theme of any given chess set can represent a time in history, a favorite exotic vacation spot, a classic movie or book series, etc. A good high quality can be passed down from generation to generation as a family heirloom and keepsake.
