Chess Board
A chess board is a checkered board consisting of 64 squares, arranged in two alternating colors, on an eight by eight grid, used in the game of chess. The two colors are called either black and white or light and dark. The variety of materials used to create a board is virtually endless.
The board is always placed so that the rightmost square on the row nearest to both players is a white or light square. The size of the chess board is dependent upon the purposes for the set and the size of the pieces. Typically, with quality chess boards, each square is approximately 1.25 percent larger then the base of the king. Also, with quality boards, each square will have been cut out and laid into the board, not simply painted on.
Some of the more common materials used to make a chess board include various types of wood, leather, plastic, and various types of stone. High quality wooden boards are used in high level professional games, while plastic, cardboard and vinyl boards are used for informal games. Other high quality boards made of glass or marble are both beautiful, long lasting and great to play on, but are not usually allowed in professional sanctioned games.
